Gun registry vulnerable Former webmaster challenges online security
------------------------------------------------------------------------

CP Wire Teviah Moro ORILLIA, Ont. -- A 13-year-old could hack into the
federal government's online gun registry and have access to the
addresses of gun owners, says a former webmaster for the Canadian
Firearms Centre.

But John Hicks, an information technology consultant in this central
Ontario city, said the real concern is what a criminal would do with a
shopping list of guns in Canada.

"If this were Amazon, Visa, or eBay, they'd be bankrupt," Hicks said. "I
have worked with 13-year-old kids who can break into this system." Hicks
said he first notified managers at the Canadian Firearms Centre about
his concerns over the site's log-on process in March 2002.

Some security measures were improved, but the business site still has
gaping security holes, Hicks said. "They run two websites; they only
fixed one." To log on for a firearms ownership transfer on the business
page, users must provide the first eight digits of their gun licence
numbers.

"I can set a program up to make one request every five minutes," he
said. "It's a process of elimination." Hackers Once past that critical
first step, hackers could get their hands on the addresses of gun
owners, he said.

Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton said he's been in contact with Hicks and
is looking into the issue.

"Whatever gaps exist, they need to be rectified immediately," Stanton
said. Gun owners "should also be assured that steps are being taken to
ensure that information is being kept confidential," he said.

A spokeswoman for the Canadian Firearms Centre said no individual
firearm information is accessible through the website.

"We actually exceed the government security standards," Maude Bourassa
said. "We monitor any possible attempts of illegal entry into the
system," Bourassa said. "No successful attempts to hack into the system
have been detected to date." Hicks questioned the CFC's ability to
monitor such attempts since the RCMP did not call him about his
demonstrations of how he overcame the site's safeguards.

Bourassa said repeated attempts to guess a password would be flagged by
the website's monitoring system.

The security system has been tested by outside experts, including the
RCMP, she said.

As mentioned.......it would be real sweet if this John Hicks gave everyone a public demonstration of the vulnerabilities of the data base!

Mac-10, if they "fix" the problem, that will be another quarter billion dollars to Communist China. (The head office of the computer company that got the untendered LIEberal contract for all the original screw-ups!) You are correct, the only way to fix the horror of C-68 is to scrap it. ALL OF IT! NOW! IT IS KILLING PEOPLE!

said.
Scrap the whole damned thing, RIGHT NOW.
That should rectify things quite nicely.

freedom fighter; we had a former premier bill van der zalm who was thinking of running again, who said if elected he would draft a constitution for b.c. guaranteeing us a right to bear arms ,just as they have in the u.s..

so it's obviusly do-able in any province if you elect the right man as premier.and with enough conservatives living out west we would have the power to put someone in who would see to it we had that kind of guarentee.
the west as you know already is stronger in conservative thinking than the east, but still not strong enough, when we are, we could field someone like former premier van der zalm.
he was a good man all around, we had the best economy in all of north america when he was in office as well, back in the late 1970's.

Magnum, does that mean the provinces will be able to make their own laws such as gun rights and property rights? I hope so. I also hope we could just divorce ourselves from ROttawo altogether.

And I say B U L L SH I T! Every cop AND bureaucrat has access! Do you trust all of them? Like Gaglianno and Cretien or "insider" Brison? (pun intended.)
sorry about the spelling mistake last post

Well I say she is a phucking liar! She didn't detect Hicks hacking into it, right while she was lying about the "safety" of this goddamn people killer law. C-68 is the most dangerous legislation ever passed. Even when Hitler registered everyone, there was only one way to find out who had guns, and that was to ask the big bad boy hisself! No computers on line then! Now any kid with computer knowlege can get a nice shopping list of guns at will. And those lying pricks wouldn't know if they were being hacked right under their nose, as that stunned hag Bourassa just admitted!

f.f. you and dave from ont. come on out, if we can't separate, we can still fill up these provinces out west with many good conservative men and women, that way at least we can elect provincial governments we agree with.

I always had a feeling this sort of thing could happen. I don't trust any stupid bureaucrats and very few politicians.
The faster Canada can change or the west says Au Revoir the better it will be for all of us.

all you need to get info from the registery is one crooked cop or worker at the cfc . or if not crooked, someone in need of a fast buck. now, how many of the people who work at the centre are going to unemployed in the near future? how many of them know how to access this info?

Just remember everyone, persons who really want this information, like biker gangs, drug dealers, and other organized crime gangs have the CASH to buy state-of-the-art computer systems and can pay to hire the very best operators to break into ANY computer database. Don't believe any numb, dumb civil servant, and certainly don;t trust them to tell you and I the truth. Mainly because they would not recognize the truth were it to hit them full face!

Here we go again ! Mad Maude says, "No successful attempts to hack into the system have been detected to date." Detected to date ! Of course, these buffoons have the gall to always tell us it's about public safety !
M.P. Bruce Stanton says, " Whatever gaps exist, they need to be rectified immediately. "
I should say so ! Like - right now !
In any case, in a letter to Stockwell, I finish with, " I believe it is the duty of every honest, law-abiding citizen, to defy, scorn and flout the unjust " laws" of C-68. Martin Luther King junior's words still ring true.
