Owning a firearm is no more dangerous than driving a boat. Boat operator licences are not in the criminal code, why should firearms be? In fact boats themselves are required to be registered and have been for over a hundred years, but it's not a crime to own or drive a boat as it is to own a firearm. If you don't have a boat operator licence or a boat registered the worst is you get a fine, similar to getting a parking ticket. You don't end up in jail.
Us firearm types should be treated, at worst, the same as boaters.
